The Thomson Family Papers consist of business and personal correspondence; business records; land records; financial records; legal papers relating to business agreements, property holdings, and lawsuits; estate records, and notebooks, belonging to John A. Thomson, brother Thomas T. Thomson, and other members of John A. Thomson's immediate and extended family. The papers of John A. Thomson consists chiefly of correspondence, account books, bills and receipts related to the mercantile store at Catskill and ferry boat operations on the Hudson River. Also includes materials related to cultivation of the Rohan potato at Catskill and his other horticultural interests; land titles, survey bills, and other papers related to investment and speculation in land. Prominent correspondents include Andrew jackson Downing and Jesse Buel. The papers of Thomas T. Thomson consists of business correspondence with brother John A. Thomson, other family members and associates relating to business interests at Catskill and abroad; financial records regarding his business with William Radcliff and family, including business at Demerara, British Guiana, his personal business interests while abroad, and his investments at Catskill. Also included are related account papers; account books; bills; personal notebooks; cashbook; land records; insurance policies, and legal documents regarding property owned at Catskill and abroad. These papers also include personal correspondence generated between immediate and extended Thomson family members; financial records kept mainly by John A. Thomson and family relating to their personal and household bills, finances, and accounts; personal and household bills and accounts of the Bartow family; and notebooks created by Thomson family members for personal business and finance, including receipt books, sales book, account ledgers, and memoranda book.

John Alexander Thomson (1776-1846) was a Catskill businessman, who operated a hardware store on Main Street and passenger and cargo ferries on the Hudson River. He was also an avid horticulturist. Thomas T. Thomson (1778-1846) was also a businessman, who worked as an agent for a trader in New York City and South America, and in later life, built homes, owned property and worked with his brother in Catskill.
